Boy swing on rope swing

In 2002 the Welsh Assembly Government published it’s Play Policy Statement. The statement is founded on the principle that the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, ratified by the UK Government in December 1991, recognises the importance of Children’s Play.

The Play Policy sets out the Welsh Assembly Governments commitment to Children’s Play, including a commitment to ensuring that all children have access to rich stimulating environments, free from inappropriate risk, and full of challenge, thereby offering them the opportunity to explore through freely chosen play both themselves and the world.

Following on from the Play Policy in 2002 the Welsh Assembly Government have developed a further document that sets out how the principles in the play policy will be implemented “The Assembly Government’s Play Policy Implementation guide” This guide draws together the Assembly Governments existing support for play, sets out our future direction for play, lists a number of key actions and a timetable for delivery, and highlights innovative practice.
